Asbestos Brakes

Asbestos Brakes were a big health hazard, as mechanics were often exposed to asbestos dust during brake maintenance. Industrial brakes were also used on some equipment.  Asbestos brakes were used by some manufacturers as late as the 1980s.

We have the following information related to asbestos brakes:

Gatke Brake Linings and Clutch Facings

Johns-Manville Brake Linings

Fletcher Works use of Asbestos Brakes on their Centrifugal Extractors

Raybestos Brake Blocks

Thermoid Brake Linings

Asbestos Bulkheads on Navy Ships

E. F. Hauserman Company provided Asbestos Bulkheads for ships.  Their 1940s catalog states that they were approved for government use. Bulkheads were partitions designed for ship hulls.  Asbestos was probably used for fire resistance.

Their catalog is just one of our recent finds. Check out our website, AsbestosBooks.com for the our newest acquisitions.

Asbestos Gaskets in Navy Ship Boilers

In our latest search of marine catalogs, we came across a catalog for United States Gasket Company, which advertises that their asbestos gaskets were readily available for the following marine boilers:
Babcock & Wilcox
Combustion Engineering
Edge Moor
Foster Wheeler
Heine
Ward

We've also found this Navy manual which indicates that metal-encased asbestos gaskets were to be used on boilers.

Industrial Dust, by Philip Drinker and Theodore Hatch, Copyright 1936

Philip Drinker and Theodore Hatch wrote about the health dangers of asbestos in their 1936 book, "Industrial Dust."

An excerpt from their book:

"Of the true silicates the mineral commonly called asbestos is the only one that has been shown to produce a disabling pneumoconiosis... It is now believed that at any state of its processing sufficient exposure to asbestos dust can cause a definite pulmonary disability, asbestosis, with characteristic symptoms and chest X-rays (184)"

Their book dicusses the pathology of asbestos, including information on symptoms and Asbestosis Bodies.

This book includes technical information on determining dust concentration, determination of partical size, controlling dust in the workplace, the design of local exhaust systems, and the use of dust respirators and air masks.

Buffalo Pumps & Asbestos Packing

In the late 1950s, Buffalo Forge Company published a pump manual that listed in great detail the types of packing used.  Most of the packing contained asbestos.  Some of the information that this book provides:
  • White Braided Asbestos was used for General Service and Water.
  • Several types of dry plastic packing contained asbestos.
  • African Blue Asbestos packing was used for many kinds of acids.
  • Teflon suspensoid outside lubricated blue asbestos used for mild acids.
  • Teflon suspensoid all lubricated blue asbestos for alakli solutions and some inorganic acids.
The complete chart with full details of types of packing, temperature guidelines, etc., is available here.  This is probably the best book available for proving that asbestos packings were used in Buffalo Pumps. Available for purchase now.

Garlock Packing Company Catalogs 1920s-1940s

The Garlock Packing Company, of Palmyra, New York, manufactured asbestos packings throughout much of the 1900s.  Their motto was "The Standard Packing of the World."

We have located the following Garlock Packings Catalogues:

Researching Asbestos Exposure in Paper & Pulp Mills

Occupational exposure to Asbestos is a leading cause of mesothelioma and asbestosis.

The paper industry in the United States is large, employing several hundred thousands of workers in paper manufacturing factories.

Mesothelioma may not appear until 20 to 50 years after exposure to asbestos. This necessitates the research of old books, catalogs, and technical documentation to determine exactly how asbestos products were used.

We have located a 1940s technical book on pulp and paper making, which provides the following information about the use of asbestos:
  • Asbestos Roofing Papers
  • Asbestos Papers are described
  • A Typical Horizontal Tube Evaporator contains asbestos packing

Johns Manville Asbestos Products Used on Airplanes

Johns-Manville is a company well known for having produced asbestos products.

Recently, we have acquired several aviation industry catalogs that include advertising for Johns-Manville products. These catalogs were published during the 1950s.

They provide clear evidence of the specific applications.

The 1957 catalog shows their asbestos products being installed on a Lockheed F-80 Jet Fighter, a J35 turbojet engine, on an engine of a Delta Airlines transport, and  the United Airlines DC-6 "Mainliner."

It also describes the use of asbestos gaskets on aircraft of the USAF and the US Navy Bureau of Aeronautics.

Currently we have the 1957 Johns-Manville Aviation Catalog and the 1958 Johns-Manville Aviation Catalog available for sale.
